The Making of a Rits & Rits Leather Keychain

We will show how we create a bear leather keychain at Rits & Rits.

First we start with a piece of fine vegetable tanned leather. For our keychains we use 4oz leather to achieve a nice feeling (not too thick, not too soft) for the end user. We use premium quality leather that we acquire from well known tanneries in UK.

Next step is to scratch the pattern on the leather by using a scratch awl and start cutting with our clickers knife. Cutting equipment must be sharp to ensure a clean cut.

Now our front side piece is cut, so we proceed with the back piece and the tag as well.

Next step is to glue the parts together. Special care need to be taken to ensure proper alignment of the two pieces since cutting the leather by hand might have some imperfections. Gluing helps to keep the parts together but the real strength is achieved when the stitching is done.

So, our keychain is now glued together and ready to move on. Next, we make the groove in which the thread will be placed. For this part we use a special tool called stitching groover.

In the next step we stamp our product with the "Rits & Rits" name and logo. Our logo is stamped using our own made wooden stamp and symbolizes the Greek letter "ρ" Rho (/ˈr/; uppercase Ρ, lowercase ρ or ϱ) is the 17th letter of the Greek alphabet.

We move on by dyeing our little bear. This keychain can only be brown for obvious reasons....

Then we pass the split ring, clean the piece and inspect. We check for flaws like leather marks, coloring imperfections, or stitching errors. We do not seek or promise the perfect flawless product. Each product is unique since is uses natural materials and is 100% hand made. What we can definitely promise is a product that has been created with repsect and meraki [may-rah-kee]

meraki [may-rah-kee] This is a word that modern Greeks often use to describe doing something with soul, creativity, or love — when you put "something of yourself" into what you're doing, whatever it may be.

We hope that our customer will enjoy our product for a long time.
